Approach this New Year with faith and the following considerations

1. Be Thankful or what you have

Though we always aim for more, we must learn to be thankful for what we have. If we are do not learn to be appreciative, we’ll never be able to be thankful. That is perhaps why the Prophet Muhammad said, whosoever is not thankful with a little من لم يشكر القليل لم يشكر الكثير will not be thankful with a lot.

Allah says, لئن شكرتم لأزيدنكم if you are thankful, Allah will increase your blessings. Successful talk show host, Oprah Winfrey said: “ Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate only on what you don’t have, you’ll never ever have enough.”

Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was asked, “Who are the best of people ?” He replied:

Those who are cheerful when they do good, who are repentant when they do wrong, who are grateful when they receive, who show patience when in difficulty and pardon when they are angered.”

That is why the Prophet often prayed;

“O Allah! I ask thee… for a grateful heart.”

2. Inculcate a Spirit of Generosity

‘Ammār bin Yāsir, son of the first martyr in Islam (Sumayyah) said:

The one who combines these three characteristics has completed Faith;

Being just from the core of the self,

Spreading (the greeting of) peace to the world,

and being generous even when possessing little.

3. Be Truly “Religious”

Advice for those who are interested in inculcating the spirit of true and practical religiosity, I quote the advice of Imam Harith al-Muhasibi …

Stand up firmly for justice as your Allah has commanded you

When moved to do good, hasten

Do not make many oaths even if you are truthful

Do not be argumentative even if you are right

Avoid verbosity in your speaking even if you are eloquent

Do not overburden yourself in matters of even if you are knowledgeable about it

Let your speaking be preceded by knowledge
